Someone’s Gotta Wanna Play

A         D                     A         D
I got a brand new ball, I got a brand new bat
A         D                     A         D
I got brand new shoes, I got a brand new hat
A         D                     A            D
I got a brand new glove, it’s a catcher’s dream
                        A                                                         A7
There’s only one thing I don’t got and that’s a baseball team!

            D                                             G                       D
I need someone to play with me, someone’s gotta wanna play
            D                                             G                           A
I need someone to play with me, someone throw the ball my way
            D                                 D7                               G                      Bb
I got an all-star shirt spelling out my name, now all I need is a baseball game
            D                                             G                     A         D
I need someone to play with me, someone’s gotta wanna play!

A         D                                 A         D
Well I know how to catch, and I know how to hit
A         D                                 A         D
And I know how to throw, I even know how to spit
A         D                                 A         D
And I know how to run, and I know how to slide
                        A                                               A7
So why did everybody pick today to run away and hide?

            D                                             G                     D
I need someone to play with me, someone’s gotta wanna play
            D                                             G                           A
I need someone to play with me, someone throw the ball my way
            D                                 D7                               G                     Bb
I got an all-star shirt spelling out my name, now all I need is a baseball game
            D                                             G                     A         D
I need someone to play with me, someone’s gotta wanna play!

(Instrumental Break)

A         D                                 A         D
Well the sun’s in the sky, and the breeze is cool

A         D                                 A         D
And there ain’t no clouds, and there ain’t no school (ha!)
A         D                                 A         D
So I’m standing in the park, and I’m all set to play
                        A                                             A7
So come on everybody, don’t you waste the day away

            D                                             G                       D
I need someone to play with me, someone’s gotta wanna play
            D                                             G                           A
I need someone to play with me, someone throw the ball my way
            D                                 D7                               G                     Bb
I got an all-star shirt spelling out my name, now all I need is a baseball game
            D                                             G                     A         D
I need someone to play with me, someone’s gotta wanna play!

            D                                 D7                               G                     Bb
I got an all-star shirt spelling out my name, now all I need is a baseball game
            D                                             G                     A         D
I need someone to play with me, someone’s gotta wanna play!
            D7                   G                     A7       D
That’s right now, someone’s gotta wanna play!
            Bb                       G             A         D
‘Til night now, someone’s gotta wanna play!

Grampa and Me
By Erin Lee Kelly

D
Grampa and me, we play pretend
G
And we play it all day long.
A
Sometimes we’re small as we can be
A7                                          D
Then we’re giants big and strong.
                                                            D7                               G
Sometimes we’re pirates on the sea plotting our next big crime.
                                                D
It’s Grampa and me and the deep blue sea
A                                             D
‘til Grandma yells “DINNERTIME!”

Grampa and me, we play pretend
And we play all afternoon.
Sometimes we’re in our rocket ship
And we’re heading for the moon.
We fire both our rockets and the ship begins to climb.
It’s Grampa and me and the galaxy
‘til Grandma yells “DINNERTIME!”

Fiddle

            G                     D                                G                    D
At dinnertime we must behave ‘cause Grandma’s worked so hard.
            E                      E7
But Grampa and me, we both can see
                A7
There’s a troll in the backyard.
            G         D                                G                    D
It slowly inches closer and it’s drooling greenish goop.
            E                      E7
We worry until at the windowsill
            A                                             A7
It hollers “PASS THE SOUP!”

Grampa and me, we play pretend
And we play it all day long.
Sometimes we’re in a jungle and we’re
Looking for King Kong.
The volcano starts erupting and we’re covered in ash and grime
It’s Grampa and me, messy as can be
‘til Grandma yells “DINNERTIME!”

Kazoo

My Grandma’s cooking you can smell a half a block away
It’s the only thing that can ever bring
me and Grampa in from play.
But as we’re sitting down to eat we cannot help but spy
A purple elf on the pantry shelf
And it hollers “PASS THE PIE!”

Grampa and me, we play pretend
And we play it all day long.
Sometimes we’re small like a buzzing bee
Sometimes we’re big and strong.
Sometimes we make my Grandma come join in our pantomime.
It’s Grampa and me and Grandma makes three
Until it’s DINNERTIME!

It’s Grampa and me and Grandma makes three
Until it’s DINNERTIME!
LET’S EAT!

Fine By Me

     A                    E            D                             A              E
My blue jeans don’t look like the blue jeans on the kids at school
                    D       E
And that’s fine by me
            D                                A
‘Cause my blue jeans fit my legs just perfectly
                            B7
And even if you don ’t agree
                        E7
if you’d look you’d see
                                    D                A
That you aren’t that different from me

My bedroom doesn’t look like the bedrooms do in magazines
And that’s fine by me
‘Cause my bedroom gives me lots of room to grow
And you can call it strange, although
If you look close you’ll see
That you’re really not that different from me

         D                                        A

My world's a very special place, just like yours is too
        D                                           A                    E
A place where I can be myself and do the things I do
        D                        E            A
No one can say I’m not okay or what I feel is wrong
        D                        E                        A                    E
My home and family’s part of me and I always will belong
                E7
I will belong

My family doesn’t look like the families do in picture books
And that’s fine by me
‘Cause my family has a lot of love to give
We’re happy with the way we live
If you try more you’ll see
That you really aren’t that different from me

My worlds a very special place, just like yours is too
A place where I can be myself and do the things I do
No one can say I’m not okay or what I feel is wrong
My home and family’s part of me and I always will belong
I will belong

When I grow up, I might not look like the people on the TV shows
And that’s fine by me
‘Cause I know I have a lot of love to give
I’m happy with the way I live
And if you’d look you’d see
That you’re not that different from me

A Little League Lament
By Erin Lee Kelly
Copyright 2003

I'm sitting here watching while my brother plays ball.
I'm sitting here thinking this game's no good at all.
Where are all the peanuts?  Where's the crackerjacks?
My parent's cheer and holler, but I came for the snacks.

Don't tell me about baseball games, we've all heard that song!
I should see a hotdog stand a half a mile long.
Hey you!  Got any soda pop?  How about some fries?
Or do you want to see a young girl waste away before your eyes?
I've always loved baseball, but today ain't quite the same.
I'm a major league eater at a little league game.

Dad would appreciate what I had done

Because his head is totally bald
F                                  C
But when I showed him his eyes got big
G                                             G7       C
And he definitely did not look enthralled
G                                 C
Then he jumped up and down
G                                 C
And waved his arms in the air
F                                  C
And he yelled a great, big yell
G                                                         G7
“Kid, what’s wrong with your hair??”

No one else thought that my hair was cool
Am                                           G
My parents have made a “no scissors” rule
Am                                           G

And learn to do it by myself

My Tooth is Loose
By Erin Lee Kelly

D                                 G                     D                  A
When I was sitting down to lunch I had a strange surprise
D                                 G                     D             A        D
Something happened in my mouth between my coke and fries
D                     G                     D                        A
My hotdog tasted funny, the ketchup wasn’t right
D                                 G                     D             A       D
I figured out just what went wrong when I took another bite:

     D                            G
My tooth is loose, my tooth is loose
     D                                A
I can’t have nothing but apple juice
     D                            G
From my gum it’s delicately hung
D                                 A                        D
And I wiggle it around with the tip of my tongue.
     D                            G
I wiggle it back, I wiggle it forth
     D                                A
I wiggle it south, I wiggle it north
     D                            G
I wiggle it left, I wiggle it right,
D                                 A                        D
And I pray that the Tooth Fairy comes tonight!

Tooth Fairy!

After lunch was arithmetic, the teacher called on me.
“What’s two plus eleven times forty-seven, divided by sixty-three?”
I shouted out the answer, I’ve never been a fool.
But no one understood me ‘cause my mouth filled up with drool.

My tooth is loose, my tooth is loose
I can’t have nothing but apple juice
From my gum it’s delicately hung
And I wiggle it around with the tip of my tongue.
I wiggle it back, I wiggle it forth
I wiggle it south, I wiggle it north
I wiggle it left, I wiggle it right,
And I pray that the Tooth Fairy comes tonight!
Tooth Fairy!

Wheels
By Marci Appelbaum & Erin Lee Kelly

I’m riding around on my brother’s red bike,
Pedaling fast through this town I don’t like.
Not like my old town where everyone knew me
Here, I’m just the new kid, they all look right through me
I’m not sure they listen whenever I speak.
But that’s gonna change, cuz I might leave next week.
And they’ll all talk about me in this old town,
How I rode off one day with my wheels spinning ‘round.

Or maybe one day I’ll have a shiny red car,
And then I’ll leave this town and I’ll drive so far.
I’ll see the sites from New York to Tangiers
And I might not be back for 83 years.
I’ll drive so fast, I’ll drive so far
I might never come back in that shiny red car.
They’ll all talk about me in this old town
How I drove outta here with my wheels spinning ‘round.

Or I might ride on a shiny red motorcycle.
Be my own boss and that motorbike’ll
Take me to anywhere, anyplace at all.
I won’t have to stay someplace just ‘cuz I’m small.
And if I find a place just like my old home
Then I’ll stop riding, ‘cuz I won’t want to roam.
And they ’ll all talk about me in that new town,
But for now I keep pedaling, my wheels spinning ‘round.

Just Pretend

D                                 A
My sister and I were home one day
D                                 A
With nothing much to do.
D                                 C
We sat around, and stared at walls
G                                 D
And watched as the green grass grew.
D                                             A
What would be fun would be to sail
D                                 A
Upon the ocean waves
D                                 C
Or live inside a big castle
G                                 A
Near a dragon in it’s cave

D                                 A
But we can’t sail the ocean
D                                 A
Or save a maiden true
D                                             C
‘Cause all we have is a little toy boat
G                                 A
and a bicycle that is blue
D                                             C                     G             D
‘Cause all we have is a little toy boat and a bicycle that is blue

Em
Our mother said “That’s nonsense!

Upon the waves you’ll float
Em
We’ll fill up the bathtub
D
And use the small toy boat
Em
And we’ll pretend we’re pirates
D
Who are seeking jewels and gold
Em
And well tell tales and we’ll sing songs
D
And we’ll be brave and bold
D                                 C
When you use your imagination
G                                 D
Possibilities never end.
D                                 C
You can do about anything
G                                 D
If you only just pretend.
D                                 C         G                     A7
You can do about anything if you only just pretend.

D                                 A
But what about the castle
D                                 A
And knights so big and strong?
D                                 C
And tiny elves and giant men
G                                 D
who do not get along.
D                                 A
We’d like to build a palace
D                     A
To call our very own
D                                 C
A magical place with great stone walls
G                     A
to be our happy home.

D                                 A
But we can’t slay a dragon

D                                 C
We cannot save a maiden girl

You’ll need the bike of course
Em
To flee a haunted castle
D
Just pretend it is your horse.
Em
You’ll gallop into the distance
D
With your maiden girl in tow
Em
And build a brand new castle
D
next where the oak trees grow.”

D                                 C
When you use your imagination
G                                 D
Possibilities never end.
D                                 C
You can do about anything
G                                 D
If you only just pretend.

(Repeat Chorus w/ three-part harmony)
(Fade Out)

Play
By Erin Lee Kelly

D                            A                    G                    A
Sometimes I 'm all alone and I don't know what to do with myself.
D                                A
I wish someone would call me up
                G                                    A
And then come on by, we'd take the games off the shelf
And we'd

D A G A
Play all day.
We would
D A G A
Play all day.

Em                        A                    D                            G
Sometimes I'm all alone with the rain pouring down in my backyard.
Em                A
I sit inside alone
        D                        G
My books no fun, my puzzles too hard.
Em                        A
My mom just looks at me and says,

D A G A
"Hey,
                                        D A G A
what are you doing today?"
                            D
And I don't know.

Em                    A
The day seems long.
      D                            G
So long that it will never end.
Em                            A
And it seems wrong
            D                                A            G    A
that all the good games need a friend.

D                            A                    G                    A
Sometimes I'm all alone and everything I have is meant for two.
D                            A
There's no point in basketball,
        G                            A
or a hand of cards or a game of Clue.
D                    A                        G
I've everything I need to have fun,
A
but still I need
D A G A
you.

You, I need you.

Long, Long Day
By Erin Lee Kelly

Copyright 2002

C                                 G
You’ve had a long, long day
               C                              F
There’s much more to do and yet
C                           G
All the grownups say
Am                              F
that its time to go to bed
C                          Am
Time to close your eyes
            F                      G
And dream of days ahead
                 Am     G     C   F    G
And your world and you will grow

C                                 G
You’ve had a long, long day
               C                              F
And you’ve torn the place apart
C                                             G
But you’re learning how to play
Am                              F
all the music in your heart
            C                          Am
Now it’s time to close your eyes
     F                       G
Another day will start
                 Am     G     C   F    G
And your world and you will grow

C                                 G
You’ve had a long, long day
               C                              F
Now the day is almost gone
C                                 G
You say you want to stay
Am                              F
But I see you start to yawn
            C                          Am
So it’s time to close your eyes
            F                      G
Soon another day will dawn
                 Am     G     C   F    G
And your world and you will grow
                 Am     G     C   F    G
Your world and you will grow
